Pure Iron is a high-purity
iron that is very ductile and the preferred
material for forging and decorative metal
work. While very popular in the first half
of the 20th century, its use was reduced
by the development of new steel alloys and
high production costs. Eventually, a point
was reached where there was no longer a domestic
source for this material.In response to requests
from our customers, Wagner has decided to
import Pure Iron from Europe for distribution
in the U.S. Samples were on-hand for MetalFab
2006 in Savannah, GA. and the ABANA conference
in Seattle, WA. At the NOMMA meeting,
legendary artisan Uri Hofi used a sample
of Wagner's Pure Iron during his Big Blu
Hammer demo. The leaf shown on this page
was the result -- in one heat with no cracking.

Technical
Information
Pure
Iron is one of the purest
grades of iron ever produced.
It has a homogenous structure
of pure ferrite containing
exceptionally low levels
of carbon. It offers special
advantages for many cold
working operations.
- The
advantages of its very low carbon content
are:
- malleability
and ductility
- since
carbon is a hardening element, there
is no risk of auto quench at high
temperatures
- carbon
is not a good factor for welding
Forging
Its great malleability eases forging. Pure Iron
has a critical working range between 1,580
and 1,920 degrees Fahrenheit (860 and 1,050
degrees Centigrade) and must not be hot worked
at or between these temperature limits. When
the iron is worked within the limits of the
critical range, it is likely to check or break.
Pure Iron must be hot worked between 800 and 1560
degrees Fahrenheit (430 and 850 degrees Celsisus)
-- red black to cherry red) and 1,940 and 2,280
degrees Fahrenheit (1,060 and 1,250 degrees Celsius)
-- yellow to bright yellow.
Weldability
Due
to its high metallurgical purity, its homogenous
grain structure, and its very low carbon content,
Pure Iron has excellent welding qualities
Resistance to Corrosion.
Pure Iron has a better resistance to electrolytic
corrosion at grain boundaries between the iron
crystal and interstitial elements. It is more resistant
to atmospheric corrosion than normal mild steels,
due to a formation of cohesive adherent layer of
rust which naturally protects the underlying iron.
Pure Iron has a superior resistance to rusting
as compared with mild steels. Oxidation is an important
consideration where hot working or high temperature
processing is involved. Oxide scale not only restricts
heat transfer but also reduces the effective material
thickness.
Pure Iron shows greater protective scale whereas
mild steel shows incoherent layers of scale which
easily flakes off to expose fresh areas of metal
for further attack.
